  1. 1901-1990. US labour leader. Born in
  2. Melbourne, Australia, he ran away to sea and
  3. settled in San Francisco. In 1931 he formed a
  4. trade union of clockworkers, and in 1934,
  5. after police opened fire on a picket line,
  6. killing two strikers, he organized a
  7. successful general strike. He remained head
  8. of the International Longshoremen's and
  9. Warehousemen's Union for many years, despite
  10. Federal Bureau of Investigation objections
  11. (later proved false) that he had concealed
  12. membership in the Communist Party on his
  13. immigration papers.
